The 1985 Audi Quattro Turbo Coupe (QTC) with its turbocharged and intercooled inline five cylinder engine and all-wheel drive is a masterpiece of mechanical design and a true automotive icon. It was the first production four-wheel drive passenger car and because of its superb handling qualities was one of the most successful rally cars in Europe during the 1980's.

Audi first introduced the Quattro at the 1980 Geneva Motor Show and was put into commercial production a few years later. A total of 664 QTCs were imported into the U.S. for the ’83, ’84, ’85 model years. This 1985 QTC is one of only 73 imported into the U.S. in that year. The 1985 Audi Quattro has a number of attractive upgrades: an updated interior, improved electrical system, fiber glass trunk lid, and 8 inch wheels. Also, the leather seats were redesigned for improved support with heatable elements that are separately thermostatically controlled. Air conditioning, power windows and locks, cruise control (no longer working), electrically heated and controlled mirrors, and a rear-window washer/wiper were included as standards. Other niceties include an AM/FM/cassette stereo, sunroof, and four-wheel power disc brakes. Power transfers to the wheels by way of a smooth-shifting five-speed transmission inter-connected to the Quattro’s three differentials for exceptional traction in any weather condition. Unfortunately, Audi discontinued importing the Quattro Turbo Coupe after the 1985 model year because of declining sales, mostly due to its high selling price ($38,000).

My father was the original owner and I inherited it from him 14 years ago. Shortly after I became the owner, I joined the Audi Quattro Club, U.S.A. and began to learn about the QTC’s mystique among Audi car buffs. I drive it mostly on weekends and to the occasional Audi club event, where it’s always admired.

Basically, the Quattro is a lot of fun to drive and has to be driven on wet roads to be truly appreciated. My goal has been to keep the car in its original form. All the parts are stock, except for a new Italian muffler. I have enjoyed maintaining it in good working condition and I've been fortunate to have excellent local mechanics who share my love of the car. I especially enjoy its Alpine White exterior, which gives it a very clean and classic Quattro look. The car has always been garaged, preventing any sun damage to the interior. The car has been driven on California streets and has never been driven on salted-icy roads— the undercarriage is in great shape.

Driving it in the Southern California desert near Palm Springs caused some pitting to the front bumper, hood and wind shield. The bumper, hood, and deck lid-spoiler have been repainted. When the wind shield was replaced (about a dozen years ago) the inside day-night mirror was placed incorrectly in dead center which interferes with lowering the driver’s sun visor. Some of the weather stripping around the passenger’s door has become worn and torn alongside the door frame. The right marker light cover (to the right of the headlight) was replaced with a non-Audi part (which looks like some of my Dad’s handy-work). The body has a few very minor dings here and there, but overall the exterior is in excellent condition. The AM-FM Stereo system has a lose connection and radio does not work well. I have the original owner’s manual and a complete repair and maintenance history.

Last year’s maintenance included replacing:

  • leaking brake booster and regulator
  • muffler
  • spark plugs, cap and rotor
  • left front wheel bearing
  • right front outer CV boot
